The Bassett Historical Center is a repository for all genealogical research and local history for this area. Our collection is one of the best in the Piedmont and in southwest Virginia, and we are known throughout the United States. People have visited the Center from each state in the United States and from fifteen foreign countries.

The Historical Center has all published and some unpublished material on Henry, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Franklin, and Floyd counties in Virginia, and Rockingham, Surry, and Stokes counties in North Carolina. We have over 10,000 family files, family records, census records, marriage records, wills, deeds, tax lists, death registers, and cemetery records, as well as several microfilm collections. We have some records for all Virginia counties, as well as records for many North Carolina counties and counties in West Virginia, South Carolina, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Much of the unpublished information is available only at the Center. Native American information is also available here, as well as one of the best Civil War collections in the Commonwealth.
