In 2013 the first floor of the Blue Ridge Bank Main Office Building in Luray underwent renovations. A staircase was removed to improve access to the Bank’s lobby from the building’s back entrance. The new hallway contained a vast expanse of white wall that needed adornment, thus the idea of a mural depicting a Luray street scene was born.

We commissioned Mrs. Merle Hilscher, a well-known local artist, to depict the scene. The likeness was taken from an old postcard that is part of the Bank’s memorabilia collection. It portrays Luray’s West Main Street as it appeared in 1893, the same year that the Bank was founded.

To say the least, we have been delighted with the result. Pictures do not do this masterpiece justice; it’s one of those things that is best experienced in person.
