Mary Ball Washington Museum & Library serves as the Lancaster Virginia Historical Society to discover, collect, preserve, interpret, and share the history and genealogy of Lancaster County and the surrounding Northern Neck area through museum exhibits and artifacts, historic buildings, a research library, and a museum shop. The MBWML complex in the Lancaster Court House Historic District includes the 1797 Clerk’s Office, 1820s Jail, and c.1830 Lancaster House. Museum exhibit galleries in these historic buildings feature changing exhibits on local topics. The Genealogy & History Research Library contains thousands of books, family genealogy papers, published county records, and other reserach materials. The Museum Shop has one of the area’s largest selections of regional books and research publications along with souvenirs, heritage items, and gifts. MBWML is named in honor of George Washington’s mother, Mary Ball Washington, who was born and lived in Lancaster County; however our site was not her birthplace or home.
