I have been a professional artist on Chincoteague Island since 1974. My primary focus is the creation of oil paintings of landscapes, birds and animals, still life and nudes. I also work in pastel and the ancient art of sumi-e painting (Chinese brush stroke painting).

Many of my landscape paintings are done en plein air (outdoors), where I am drawn to the challenge of painting the fleeting light. In all of my work the emphasis is on the light, whether it is the way sunlight peeks through a cresting wave, paints the marsh in gold, lights a flying bird’s wings, or highlights the curves of a woman’s body. It’s all about the light.

I paint in translucent layers of oil, building from the basic form of the composition through delicate layers of color until I reach the final layer of highlights. In this way I am able to portray a softness and depth that is characteristic of my work.

My formal art training began at age 10, and gives a confidence and surety to my work that can only come from years of training and constant practice. I love to learn and challenge myself, and in this way I continue to grow as an artist.
