In 1992, Melissa made her first basket. At the time, she was simply interested in weaving her own creation. It would not be long, however, before that first basket turned into dozens more. Within a couple of years, Melissa started attending craft shows selling her beautiful and finely crafted splint-woven creations under the name, Thyme In A Basket. When the Bay School Community Arts Center of Mathews County, Virginia was founded in 1997, Melissa became one of their first instructors - teaching classes in splint-woven baskets. Since then she has mastered her craft while teaching numerous new weavers. After 20 years of teaching and attending craft shows, Melissa took the next logical step toward her dream by opening her own brick and mortar gift store. Thyme In A Basket, located at 325 Queen Street in historic Tappahannock, Virginia, offers a large and varied inventory of jewelry, home decor, women’s accessories, books, art, gourmet food, and of course her baskets on vintage and antique furniture. She uses one room to teach classes on splint-woven baskets.
